THE MILL HOUSE CONISTON
The Mill House project involved the careful dismantling of an ageing structure near a historic mill, with every step closely observed and recorded by an archaeologist to ensure that any significant elements were preserved for future reference. BRITICAN Design + Build approached this sensitive site with precision and respect, overcoming challenges such as those posed by Storm Arwen. The result is a bespoke 2-bedroom retreat featuring an open-plan living and kitchen area, designed with modern ply to deliver a refined yet rustic finish that integrates seamlessly with its natural surroundings.
Architect-Designed by Ben Cunliffe
In collaboration with renowned architect Ben Cunliffe, every element of this build was designed with precision. From intimate snug areas to expansive living spaces, the focus was on both functionality and aesthetic harmony.
Bespoke Kitchen by The Rusland Movement
BRITICAN collaborated with The Rusland Movement to create a bespoke kitchen with high-quality, handcrafted features. The space embraces a custom-made design with a Norwegian-inspired vibe that perfectly complements the overall aesthetic. The kitchen’s tailored, artisanal approach enhances its unique character while delivering practical functionality.
Meeting Timelines Under Pressure
This project truly exemplifies our ability to optimise a programme and deliver on time, even in the face of unforeseen challenges. The delays caused by Storm Arwen set the timeline back by four months, yet our team’s efficiency and adaptability allowed us to accelerate the build process and achieve our revised deadlines. This was a significant accomplishment, demonstrating our commitment to maintaining quality under pressure.
Grounded in Place
To ensure the design blended with the surrounding environment and met planning requirements, we carefully selected reclaimed limestone and slate, enhanced with pointed finishes. Inspired by the character of the neighbouring mill, we incorporated exposed steelwork to subtly introduce an industrial edge that naturally complements the Lake District setting. This thoughtful approach gave a nod to the old mill, adding a touch of charm while respecting the site’s heritage.
